International Conference on food security & resource efficiency by IFOAM EU Group

The IFOAM EU Group in cooperation with the Committee of Regions, TP organics and Member of European Parliament Martin Häusling are organising a conference on 09th November, 2011 in Brussels which will address food security and the efficient use of natural resources in the food chain.

Resource Efficiency and Food Security – Opportunities and challenges for sustainable food systems

The main question leading through the debate will be: How can a growing population be fed without burdening the environment? Experts from scientific and political backgrounds will share their knowledge on the impacts of European feed imports, the role of the consumer, the potentials of the EU initiatives for resource efficiency and a ‘Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE)’ and the role organic farming can play to meet the food and environment related societal challenges. Policy-makers, consumers, civil society representatives and stakeholders are invited to join the debate in this afternoon session, exploring the relations of the EU resource efficiency strategy with innovation and research, and illuminate possible avenues in which food security can go hand in hand with resource efficiency.

Resource efficiency has been proclaimed as one of the flagship initiatives of the EU to meet the Europe 2020 target of smart, sustainable and inclusive growth: by means of streamlined collective efforts in all areas from carbon emissions to biodiversity protection and water usage, the EU plans to decouple economic performance from resource use. Also agriculture must play its role in this endeavour. The Commission Roadmap for a resource-efficient Europe has been adopted on 20th September 2011.
